I have nice long hair and sometimes people comment,”you should donate your hair to LOL.” bug I haven’t been harassed or goaded endlessly about. The people complaining about being harassed are probably paranoid or they’re drama queens.

While I respect your analysis, the analysis is deeply flawed. I have donated to LoL four times. I have no reservations about doing it nor will I after reading your comments or others.

LoL is upfront about what they do. They make hairpieces. They sell hair that cannot be used. They use the money from selling hair to make hairpieces. They are a non profit organization.

Some things that should be understood is that non profit organizations still have to generate revenue to stay operational. From having an operations and/or storage facility to paying for supplies, all these things cost money. Since you have never worked for a non profit (an assumption I gathered from the absence of important expenses in your analysis), I can tell you that my experience from someone who worked at a private Catholic charity that offers housing and care to neglected and abandoned children. Charities still need to run LIKE a business to survive. They have employees too.

If you are really interested, simply call up the charity and ask for more information. They will usually have some information to send people. Your concerns aren’t the first nor will they be the last most likely. Many charities have to justify how much they spend and where it gets spent. The overarching judgments on LoL being a scam are without a doubt unsubstantiated.

I think the issue here is that hair that is donated to LOL may not actually be being used to create hair appliances (stepping around the wig-vs.-hairpiece rhetorical poostorm) but is instead sold off to whereever (perhaps to make oil absorbers?) and then the proceeds of that are used to buy appliance-suitable hair which is then made into appliances.

It has long been my understanding that hair that comes from people who shampoo regularly (that is to say, near-daily) isn’t suitable for hairpieces or wigs.

Another issue appears to be that people who have long hair are regularly told – usually by near-strangers – that they should donate it or that they should have donated it if they get a lot cut off. LOL and the like seem to have successfully spread this meme that there is some duty long-haired people have for doing this, whereas there is no assurance that any donated hair actually winds up in an appliance (meaning that you’d might as well just toss LOL a few bucks and keep your hair).

How the heck do you blame Locks of Love for people cutting or shaving your head off. The people cutting your hair are the ones to deal with. And were you unconscious or intoxicated that you did not see your hair getting cut??? I sounds like you need to take a little responsibility too. I mean, when I get my hair cut, I tell the stylist exactly what I want and I watch and pay attention to what she’s doing. If she were to take a buzzer to my head I’m sure I’d notice.

What really matters is that children like my daughter can Swim with friends and be as normal as she can be and its because of her hair piece from LOL.
