Seriously, I've only ever stuck with netgear and I've had no issues hooking the routers up. At least from a hardware standpoint, user error is another issue. :grumble: I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that bullshit. I've been there before and it really turns you into someone else. I'm not one to want to murder someone but the hate that being on hold for hours causes really helps me understand why people go postal. I'd never do it of course, but I can sympathize. What happened to us being the customer, paying THEIR bills, and therefore deserving respect? Eh, guess that's gone.

D-link pulled some similar crap on me. They wanted me to pay $180 temporarily for a routerthat I had only paid $135 with shipping for - I don't even think I saw an option for the extreme wait... and that was after their tech told me that because I had bought it online the warranty wasn't valid. Yeah ... I coerced the RMA department out of him only to get the info about how much money they wanted to basically deal with the return. :grr:

Amazon took care of the return for me after I told them what had happened. They messed up a little with the refund initially but got it straightened out in the end (they gave me the option to exchange but I didn't want a d-link router again after my experience with their tech support) and this was all despite being beyond the 30 day return policy. I think I was out a total of $4 they kept for shipping but I was fine with that. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Amazon because sometimes they'll anger me before fixing something (like I got all upset over not getting my full refund as promised and then they took care of it really quickly... and they took a manufacturer defect item past their 30 day return policy so I think it's more love than hate.)

I'm beginning to think places like d-link and belkin are doing this so they don't have to deal with as many returns. I also get the sense that they are putting your money in sweeps accounts to use it as short term investments at the cost of the consumer... sigh...

I installed opensource firmware on an old d-link I had and I'm still debating what new router I want to add to the mix. I know it's not going to be a d-link or a belkin... For now the d-link with DDWRT has been passable.
