I feel sorry for Spielberg
Posted by jen June 28th, 2005 in Media Junkie.Reviews are coming in for War of the Worlds. They sound great! “
peilberg’s best work in years!” and the like. Too bad it’s too late to save it.
I predict a “Gigli” like monster flop thanks to Tom “I’m a whackjob who thinks scifi alien movies are true” Cruise.
I don’t blame Spielberg for being mad at Cruise for upstaging the movie and just plain stop showing up to premier events. Why bother, no one gives a crap for the movie he’s made now. It’s one of the worst Hollywood summer seasons on record and this movie is not going to change it with the negative flack Cruise is creating by himself. (I personally think he’s coocoo for cocopuffs.)
Just as quickly as we fell for him in ‘Risky Business’ 20 years ago, we have fallen out of love with Tom Cruise.
It’s like having a crush on that cute guy at the office for years then you get the nerve up and finally invite him over for dinner and miracles of miracles… he accepts! When he arrives, he’s charming and friendly but he immediatly excuses himself to your bathroom. Thirty minutes later walk in to see if everything is okay and find him in your bed, dressed in your underwear, touching himself improperly while looking at a picture of your Mom.
Am I that creeped out by Tom yet? You betcha. Is the respect for his talent gone? Oh yeah. Long gone.
I predict, if WotW does indeed flop to depths unseen by singing bootylicous latinas and mall rat Southies, the guy doesn’t do a movie for two years. His current contracts will somhowmanage to dry up pre-production.
Tom won’t be able to pay to get a script for sent to him after this debaucle. He’ll be the new Burt Reynolds who burned hard and fell fast under media scruinty and we’ll rediscover his shrivelly 65 year-old self in 20 years and be amazed that the old hasbeen hack can act after all.
Anyone want to take that bet?

I’ve seen WOTW. It’s relentless: Nonstop fleeing, shooting, incinerating and screaming. Not a whole lot of story. And then it just kinda ends. Morgan Freeman has to introduce and provide an epilogue to explain what happened because there’s no narrative presented in the story that would explain why the aliens are there and why they uh, leave. As it were.
But don’t count on this sinking TC’s career. He’s about to go work on Mission Impossible 3, and that’ll be out by the end of the year. He’ll still get jobs. Will they eventually dry up if he keeps up this spiel? Probably, but it’ll take years, not months. Don’t forget, there are a lot of Scientologists in Hollywood….
I’ve had almost zero interest in this movie since I heard it was being done - and not because of Cruise. The written story is boring as hell; maybe the radio version was better. The only reason I have any interest in the movie is to see how the aliens die. In the book they have no immunity to the bacteria and virii found on earth and just sort of peter out. They’re selling the movie as an action piece so I’m really curious to see how the aliens are “defeated” and if they kept the germs or have Cruise blasting them away with some secret goverment weapon. Personally I’m hoping for the germs just so a bunch of people expecting a shoot ‘em up adventure walk out going “WTF?!?!” …oh, and because it’d be true to the original work.
What’s most completely undesirable about TC these days isn’t his terrible taste in movie roles. It’s his blatant pbulicity stunt of the last, oh, month or two? You know, the one in which he falls in love with a girl half his age (okay, I don’t know how old he is, but he’s officially old, and I don’t know how young she is, but she’s officially a baby who seems like a brat, but admittedly, it’s hard to say how someone REALLY is, but whatever..) and he makes her dreams come true because even as a little girl she fantasized that she’d marry that GOD of the silver screen and oh, she just happens to have a movie coming out this month, too! It’s such a perfect twist of fate how she hasn’t done anything since Dawson, and all of a sudden she gets a movie role AND she’s met the LOVE of her life the month it’s premiering? God, I would KILL to be her (and have a slice o’ that hunk while I’m at it!)
The whole thing is so transparent, I don’t know why I care. But it makes me want to spew.
Well, there was that role in Pieces of April.
Yeah, you’re right. She hasn’t done anything since Dawsons.
he’s always nauseated me, I’m just glad others are noticing.
Girl,
I wished you were right.
Sigh.
