Mom had two surgeries today. That’s right two for one hip. No, it wasn’t planned.
She went into pre-op at 7:30 am and was out in post-op at about 10:30. Then they took her to xray to get a shot of the hip to make sure the new one was all aligned right.
In moving her they dislocated the new hip. Mom was still doped up from her sleepy-drugs and spinal tap she wasn’t doing crap. They rushed her BACK into the ER to try to get the new hip joint in the new socket. Nope, they had to open her up again. AGAIN.
It’s now 4pm, the surgeon finally reimerges to say she’s out and “we don’t know how she did it…”
Yeah asshat, SHE did it. YOUR people were manhandleing her to get her on the xray table becasue she’s too drugged up to do anythign but be deadweight. YOUR people did it. MY mom just has to pay for it, money she doens’t have. She doens’t have enough for your surgery, let alone your fix-what-your-people-did-to-rebreak-her redux.
Mom didn’t get back to her room (that had been waiting since 10am) till about 6pm. TWELEVE hours and TWO surgeries, and TWO rounds of genral anesthesia after she arrived for ONE two hour typical surgerical joint replacement. We snuck in to the supply room and got her like 7 blankets because she kept saying she was so cold. She was supposed to actually put weight on it today, but nope, so another day of hospitization she needs to pay for with money they don’t have.
God I wish we lived in Cananda. Home of the free my ass.

Hmmmm…maybe that was the hospital’s way of getting past that whole charging her for half of the surgery thing.

If ya gotta have two hip surgeries, lord it’s better to have them at the same time. My mom had hip replacement surgery a few years ago, went through the whole physical therapy process, got out, didn’t seem to be much better.
I got the call from the doctor because I was home that weekend: There was a recall on one of the parts they put in her (something about mineral oil being left on the piece so the bone would never graft to it properly) and they then had to open her up again and do it nearly all over and then she had PT again for months …. sigh.
That is not a message you want to have to pass along, nor a surgery you want twice. (And yeah, there *was* financial compensation, you betcha Charlie.)
Good luck with your Mom. It’s a tough thing to go through, but she should be in a lot less pain once she’s learned to walk again.
