According to Webster either lighted or lit is correct…

My college journalism prof said “lighted, not lit!” in a Joan Crawford, “No wire coathangers” way.

I can’t believe that I’m enough of a grammar geek that I went to bed thinking about this, woke up thinking about this, and now have tried to find a definitive answer.

As near as I can tell, “lit” does not take an adjectival form. Thus, the word you want is “lighted”.

Now, having established that “up” does not belong in the sentence, what’s the best way to construct the thought you’re trying to express? I don’t know, but here are two possibilities:

“ee that lighted circle?”

“ee that circle that is lighted?”

The second one doesn’t sound right at all.

And, of course, if it were me speaking in day-to-day conversation, I’d still say, “ee that lit circle?”

Okay, I don’t know which is correct, lit or lighted, but I do know that you can kill the “up”. The “up” after “lit” OR “lighted” is woefully incorrect and is enough to make a grammarian cringe.
