I can spot an Ohioan when I see one

I was reading RowdiGirl due to a hit tracker link, and I saw this entry, reading I realised most of my answers are identical, which is not common in this country. (Go out east and Ask for a “POP”, they look like you just asked them to punch you.) I figured she must be from Ohio. So, I looked for a bio block and I found, it, Yup, Ohio. Damn, I’m good.

So, anyway, it’s nice to see another Ohio Blogger. I’ve added her to the list of reads down belows on the left and given her the honored * (buckeye?) of
“Ohioanism”.. is that a word?

So… My answers to the This or That Tuesday - late as I never usally do these things:

1. Kleenex or tissue? kleenex

2. Soda or pop (or tonic or whatever)? Pop
– pure test of true Ohioanism.

3. A sandwich on a long roll: sub or hero? sub

4. Glasses or spectacles? Glasses

5. TV or television? TV

6. Movie or film? Movie
- but then I think of FILM as being art house stuff and MOVIES being the local pleace.

7. Sofa or couch? couch
- sofa if I refer to it to easterners.

8. Stove or range? Stove

9. Remote control or clicker? Remote

10. Supermarket or grocery store? Grocery

Ohio, it’s a state of mind. I’ll let you guess where the armpit is.

Out here in Oregon, I grew up saying “pop” but converted to “soda” while at college. You should check out this dialect survey if you’re interested in more comparisons of this kind.

  2. 2 Jeff

Where I’m from, the answer to #3 is “grinder”.

I say “soda” now. Don’t know why. I worked with a bunch of Bostonians for a while and it stuck. Asking for a soda down here really throws people.

Unlike many Cincinnatians, I don’t say “please” when asking someone to repeat what they just said.

Warren, Youngstown, Akron, Dayton and Toledo are the collective armpits of Ohio.

I know you loathe Cincinnati, but I feel it has more redeeming values.

Toledo does have the Mudhens and Tony Packo’s Deli. That gives them some points.

Columbus tore down the Kahiki so I am on the fence about them. Cleveland is so-so. Hell, connect the dots and maybe all of Ohio is the armpit of the USA.

Crap, I own property in an armpit.

Dayton is not an armpit… in fact Dayton I think is much more cultural than cincinnati, their musem is MUCH better and they have alot more in the way of Arts events than Cinci does. Opera, ballet, modern dance, and a VERY active intercultrual music and arts scene thanks to cityfolk (http://cityfolk.org/). And thier downtown is navigiable! and… you can get there from here! And if you need to jump off to get gas you can get back the way you came! I wont even get into race issues and city council stuff, Dayton wins hands down, lol.

Of course I grew up more in Dayton than anywhere, but I know these truths to be self evidient!

And if you don’t believe me about the musuem, we’ll go sometime. [yoda] Prove to you I will! [/yoda]

Cincinnati and Columbus’ musuems *both* suck in very major ways, but both are sports towns, daytons rich old industrialists spent money on arts and culture not university team dontions and and buying teams and stadiums. Most big sports towns have sucky museums fromwhat I’ve seen.

The only other descent ones in Ohio are Toledo and of course, Cleveland. Who has a world class museum. Yes I’ve been to them all. I’m a musuem geek.

Wow! Now I feel really priviledged I’m really glad someone reads my blog. I was afraid it was only myself and Shrubber who looked at it! I’ve been in Columbus since July and now I’m moving back up north to the Akron/Canton area in the treelined suburbs of Stow. You’re right about the museums in Cleveland - They are superb. I love spending time at the Museum of Art.

Thank you again for linking to my site!

    1 Kleenex
2 fizzy drink no generic name exists really
3 no name for this in the UK either
4 specs - glasses are what I drink out of
    5 TV or sometimes telly
    6 movie
7 sofa though some call it settee
8 cooker, a stove is something industrial, and a range is some huge catering sized cooker or a great cast iron thing (eg Aga, if such things exist in the US).
    9 remote
10 supermarket. We have shops not stores in the UK unless they are department stores.

Two nations divided by a common language!

  7. 7 FunkyBlue

    Don’t forget Springfield. It’s the armpit’s understudy.

And you can’t really call Cincy a sports town. They have something that resembles a baseball team and a football team but to call them sports teams after the last couple years is really stretching it. We need to have the OSU Bucks go against the Bengals and see if they can fare better…

  8. 8 Kathleen

I was born and raised in Boston and everyone I know calls it Tonic.

And Jen, I’m pretty East Coast, and I call it a couch too. : )

  9. 9 sledge

    WOODAMN for Ohio bloggers!

and damnit - it is, and always will be “pop”.

  10. 10 Chesterfield Furniture

in the uk we call it pop as well.
